Senior meals are held every Wednesday at the Benz Center throughout the year at noon. Anyone over the age of 60 is welcome, and a younger person may accompany a senior. Senior meals are open to everyone, regardless of income. Donations are accepted in a plain envelope (whatever you feel you can give). Reservations are not necessary. Delicious meals are served with the help of Ferne Tilton and Barbara Bryant, two of Sandwich’s favorite cooks. A monthly menu can be picked up at the Benz Center.
VNA/Hospice conducts a free blood pressure screening on the second Wednesday of the month from 11-12.
The recent addition to the Benz Center is a home theatre system used for education and entertainment for our visitors. The Alfred Quimby Trust and a private donor provided grants to acquire this equipment: the Blu-ray disk player and sound / projection system which allow for movies and power point presentations. Our future dreams include satellite and internet connections which would allow for web-based programs and televised special events.
Movie Nights: To see the movie schedule, information and brief film previews, click on our website link, Movies at the Benz. Our motion picture license requires that you become a member in order to view information about the movies. It’s easy to do. Sign in with your email followed by a password for this site. Remember to keep the password available for your next visit. You do not need to become a member to view the rest of our website.
Fundraising: The Benz Center Board of Directors mailed the annual fundraising appeal to residents of Sandwich in July, 2011. We must raise approximately $12,000 for operating expenses for the community center. Your generous support is greatly appreciated. Donations may be made by checks payable to Doris L. Benz Community Center and mailed to P.O. Box 52, Center Sandwich, NH 03227.
Volunteers: Volunteers are always welcome to assist with building and grounds maintenance, movie nights, fundraising efforts, and other projects, as needed. Without our volunteers, the Benz Center could not function. Our officers, Board of Directors and Coordinator devote many long hours in keeping the building and grounds maintained, the calendar and usage monitored, programs planned, policies developed for building use as well as planning for the future.
A great big “Boo-yah!” goes out to David Vierus, Peter Pohl and David Cox. Thank you for climbing the rafters to clean the fans, shampooing the carpet, and being on call. Thank you to outgoing chairman of Building & Grounds committee, Ted Stanier, for many years of devoted service. And thanks to incoming Building & Grounds chairman, Dale McKay, who already has volunteered many hours to maintain and protect our valuable community resource.
Thanks go to the Sandwich Perkins family who have spearheaded our movie project—planning for and acquiring the movies, then faithfully showing them. John, Anne and Ellen Perkins have spent many hours working on the selections, making certain that we are legal to show them, and greeting the visitors and guests. Thank you all!
Our 2011 board has been active with revising by-laws and the annual fundraising appeal; planning future programs; feeding the town election workers; and dreaming up ways to make the Benz Center truly a community center for all of the residents of Sandwich.
If you haven’t been to the Benz Center lately, drop by for a movie on Saturdays; come for Seniors’ lunch on Wednesdays; take a piano lesson or an exercise class. We’re available for private parties or your organizational meetings. In June the Benz Center was very busy with baby and bridal showers and parties celebrating anniversaries, graduations and birthdays. Thanks for your support and your generous donations.
