History of the Center

  1. Who was Doris L Benz?

Miss Benz was an heiress to her father's leather tanning business in Lynn, Mass. She owned and managed it herself after his death.

She was one of the first eight women to graduate from finance school at Radcliff College in the '30s. Miss Benz spent her summers in her home on Fellows Hill Road in North Sandwich, and was a great supporter of our community.

When she passed away in 1984 she left a trust that was largely earmarked for scholarships, but it was also her wish to build a community center for the use of all the people of Sandwich. Of course, the community center was named in her honor.
